✨ Haircut trends autumn winter 2026 2027: the six to know

Some seasons have one haircut that everybody asks for. This is not one of them. Autumn winter 2026 2027 brings six very different shapes, which coexist because they answer entirely different needs.

We have separated them out one by one: what each one actually is, which texture it suits, how much upkeep it asks for. At the end you will also find the chapter on fringes, which is not a haircut in itself but changes the result of almost all of them.

💎 The direction of the season

What holds such different shapes together is a contrast: on one side polished, ultra-smooth perfection, on the other soft and deliberately imperfect texture. The autumn winter 2026 2027 runways in Milan and Paris placed the two side by side, often within the same show.

The other development is that the extreme wolf cut is losing ground. After years of aggressive, disconnected layers, the season prefers cleaner silhouettes that create natural movement without demanding a diffuser and half an hour of work every morning.

✨ 1. Micro bob: the clean line at the chin

The micro bob returns after a quiet spell and is the most geometric cut of the season: a blunt line at cheekbone or chin level, precision-cut ends, no visible layering. It is the exact opposite of the shag.

It works beautifully on straight, fine hair, because the blunt line concentrates the mass and creates an impression of density that layering would disperse. On very curly or frizz-prone hair it needs careful assessment, since the geometry only reads if the fibre stays compact.

It is also the cut that ages worst: after six weeks the line softens and the effect fades. Frequent trims need to be part of the plan.

💎 2. Deconstructed bixie: between pixie and bob

The bixie is the hybrid of bob and pixie, and this year it arrives in a decidedly more deconstructed form: a very short, tapered nape, longer piecey strands at the sides, an asymmetric side parting. The difference in length between back and front is the point, not a flaw.

It is the cut that highlights cheekbones and bone structure most, which is exactly why it has to be built around the individual: the same shape that opens up an oval face can harden a square one. This is a haircut where the consultation carries most of the weight.

✨ 3. Sleek bob: the wet-look, combed back

Seen at Celine and now everywhere, this is the season’s boldest option: hair combed straight back with a glossy wet-look finish, a compact surface and an almost sculptural shape. The two lengths that work are the chin-length bob and the lob that partly covers the neck.

The reason it appeals so much is not only the shape: the extreme shine reflects onto the face and makes the skin look instantly more radiant. But it depends entirely on the health of the hair, because on a porous fibre the wet look turns into a greasy look. We build it with the glass hair treatment or, for longer-lasting smoothness, with nanoplasty.

💎 4. Soft shag: controlled imperfection

At the opposite end from the sleek bob sits the soft shag, also launched by Celine. Light layers framing the face, volume concentrated at the crown, longer and more playful lengths at the nape. The result looks spontaneous, as though the hair simply fell that way on its own.

Do not confuse it with the wolf cut, which is something else entirely: the wolf is disconnected and rock, with heavily thinned ends and volume almost exclusively on top. The soft shag is gentler, with layers that blend rather than break. It is after movement, not contrast.

It is the best choice for wavy or curly hair, because it works with the natural texture instead of fighting it. On straight hair it can be done, but the layers need to be more contained or the ends fall flat.

✨ 5. Textured lob: the mid-length that suits everyone

The lob, the long bob that falls between the chin and the collarbone, is back in the spotlight after a few quieter seasons. This year’s version gives up blunt lines and geometry in favour of layered, thinned ends that lighten without weighing down the face, and a gentle outward flick at the tips that creates movement.

It is the most democratic cut on this list, the one that holds up on almost every texture and face shape, and the easiest to wear through winter under coats and scarves. It can be worn with or without a fringe. If you want the softest, most elegant version, that is the one we describe in our article on the soft bob.

💎 6. Butterfly cut: for those who will not cut

For anyone unwilling to give up length, the cut of the season is the butterfly. Feathered, soft internal layers frame the face and create volume, while the lengths below the shoulders stay intact. From the front it looks like a mid-length cut, from behind it is long hair.

It is the spiritual opposite of the wolf cut: where the wolf seeks disconnection and rock attitude, the butterfly seeks fluidity and glamour, with ends that curve gently and a polished finish. It is also the saviour of fine hair, because it delivers instant volume without sacrificing centimetres.

One warning: on lengths damaged over the summer, layering highlights split ends rather than hiding them. Before cutting we assess reconstruction with Résistance Kérastase.

✨ What about the fringe?

A fringe is not a haircut in itself, but it changes the character of almost every cut above. This season’s version is soft and wispy, never blunt: on the soft shag it blends into the side strands, on the butterfly it opens like a curtain over the eyes, on the lob it can be added or removed without altering the shape.

It needs trimming every three to four weeks, so it should be chosen in full knowledge of the commitment involved. We have a dedicated piece on Birkin bangs, the most elegant interpretation of this family.

💎 Which of the six is yours

  • 💎 Fine, straight hair: micro bob to compact it, or butterfly cut if you do not want to lose length.
  • ✨ Wavy or curly hair: soft shag, the only one that truly works with your texture.
  • 💎 Thick hair: textured lob, which removes weight while keeping the length.
  • ✨ Ready for a radical change: deconstructed bixie.
  • 💎 Little time in the morning: textured lob or butterfly, both of which air-dry well.
  • ✨ Evenings and events: sleek bob, the most immediate effect of them all.

At Alexim Atelier Duomo every haircut begins with a proper hair consultation, one client at a time. You can also see our haircut service in central Milan and, for comparison, the cuts from last summer, from which many of these shapes derive.

✨ Styling: less than you think

  • 💎 Soft shag and butterfly: volumising mousse or texturising spray on damp hair, then air-dry with your fingers or use a diffuser.
  • ✨ Textured lob: a round brush on the ends only, to hint at the outward flick.
  • 💎 Micro bob and sleek bob: straighteners and a shine product, the shape does the rest.
  • ✨ Bixie: a little texturising paste on the strands, worked with your hands.

💎 Cut and colour should be planned together

This season’s layers need light to be legible: on a flat colour the movement disappears, on a dimensional base every layer shows. This is especially true for the soft shag and the butterfly, where colour does half the work.

It is worth reading our guide to the hair colour trends for autumn winter 2026 2027 as well, and coming to the salon with an idea of both.

✨ Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest haircut trend for autumn winter 2026 2027?
There is no single one. The season brings opposing shapes together: micro bob and sleek bob, blunt and glossy, alongside soft shag and butterfly cut, soft and full of texture.

What is the difference between a soft shag and a wolf cut?
The wolf cut is disconnected and rock, with sharp layers and volume only on top. The soft shag has layers that blend into one another and aims for gentle movement. This year the extreme wolf is losing ground.

And between a butterfly cut and a wolf cut?
They are opposites. The butterfly has feathered layers that blend, ends that curve gently and a polished finish. The wolf goes for raw texture and a deliberately undone look.

Can I have a butterfly cut without losing length?
Yes, and that is its main strength: the layers work inside the hair and around the face, while the lengths stay.

How often do these cuts need redoing?
The micro bob roughly every six weeks, because the blunt line rounds off quickly. Bixie and sleek bob every six to eight weeks. Soft shag, lob and butterfly hold their shape for up to ten.

Do you speak English at the salon?
Yes. We work with international clients every day and the consultation can be carried out entirely in English.
